A name can say a great deal about an organization. It can reflect where it began, what it values, and what it hopes to become.
For us, the name Vandalia carries a strong sense of place, history, and identity. It connects our firm to West Virginia and the broader Appalachian region where Vandalia Wealth was founded. It also represents qualities that continue to shape the way we work, resilience, integrity, perseverance, independence, and a deep appreciation for relationships built over time.
But Vandalia is more than a reference to the past or a point on a map. It represents the kind of wealth management firm we are building for the future—one that remains grounded in its values while serving individuals, families, business owners, retirement plans, and institutions across an expanding geographic footprint.
A Name Rooted in History
The name Vandalia has a distinctive place in the history of the region.
In the years preceding the American Revolution, Vandalia was proposed as the name of a 14th British colony in North America. The proposed colony would have included nearly all of present-day West Virginia, except for the Eastern Panhandle, along with a significant portion of what is now Kentucky. Point Pleasant was proposed as its capital.
The effort was associated with the Grand Ohio Company, whose organizers included Benjamin Franklin and other prominent colonial figures. The name “Vandalia” was selected in honor of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, who claimed ancestral ties to the ancient Vandal people of Europe. Although the proposed colony received support at several levels of the British government, it was never formally established. The approaching American Revolution ultimately overtook the plan.
While Vandalia never appeared on the map as an official colony, its name endured. Today, it remains part of West Virginia’s historical and cultural identity. The annual Vandalia Gathering at the State Capitol celebrates the state’s traditional music, dance, crafts, stories, and food. West Virginia University’s Order of Vandalia recognizes individuals whose service has made an extraordinary contribution to the university.
For us, this history gives the name a meaningful connection to the land and communities from which our firm emerged. Vandalia evokes a region with a distinct identity, shaped by mountains, small towns, close communities, local businesses, family traditions, and generations of people accustomed to building something lasting.
Rooted in Appalachia
Appalachia is not simply where Vandalia Wealth began. It has influenced how we understand service, responsibility, and relationships.
The Appalachian region is often defined by its geography, but its character is found in its people. It is a place where trust is earned over time, where reputations matter, and where relationships often extend across families and generations. It values hard work, resourcefulness, loyalty, and personal responsibility.
Those qualities are reflected in the way we believe financial advice should be delivered.
Wealth management should feel personal long before it feels institutional. Clients should know the people helping guide their financial lives. They should feel heard, understand the reasoning behind important recommendations, and know that their advisors appreciate the responsibilities attached to their wealth.
That is why attentive listening is central to our approach. Before providing advice, we seek to understand each client’s circumstances, priorities, concerns, and long-term goals. A financial plan should not begin with a product or a predetermined solution. It should begin with a conversation.
Our Appalachian roots also remind us that wealth is about more than numbers. It may represent decades of work, the value of a family business, the security of a surviving spouse, an education for the next generation, support for a cherished community, or a legacy a family hopes to preserve.
Every financial decision exists within a larger personal story. Our responsibility is to understand that story and provide thoughtful, disciplined guidance around it.
The Beginning of Vandalia Wealth
Vandalia Wealth was established in July 2021 when Ian McIlvaine, John Jones, Lois Crichton, and Samuel Crichton moved their established team practice from Wells Fargo Advisors to create an independent wealth management firm.
Their professional paths had converged years earlier, but they shared more than a workplace. They shared a belief about what a financial advisory firm should be.
They believed clients deserved personal attention, thoughtful planning, clear communication, and advice centered on their interests. They also believed independence could provide greater flexibility to build the right structure, select appropriate resources, and create a firm capable of serving clients across generations.
Starting Vandalia Wealth was therefore more than a change of name. It was an opportunity to build intentionally.
The firm was founded on the belief that financial advice should combine professional discipline with genuine human connection. Clients deserve more than access to investments. They deserve partnership, stewardship, and long-term clarity.
Those principles continue to guide Vandalia Wealth as the firm grows.
Rooted Does Not Mean Restricted
Our name proudly reflects where we come from, but it does not limit where we can go or whom we can serve.
Vandalia Wealth began in West Virginia and remains deeply connected to Appalachia. At the same time, our clients, advisors, employees, and professional relationships increasingly extend beyond the region. As the firm grows into new communities, we carry our founding values with us.
That distinction is important: Vandalia is geographically rooted, but not geographically restricted.
The qualities associated with our heritage—grit, unity, integrity, devotion, and excellence—are not exclusive to one state or region. They matter to families, professionals, business owners, and institutions everywhere. Trust, attentive service, disciplined planning, and long-term thinking travel well.
Our growth is therefore not about leaving our roots behind. It is about demonstrating that a firm can expand without losing the qualities that made it worth building in the first place.
We want clients in every community we serve to experience the same care, consistency, and sense of responsibility that shaped Vandalia Wealth from the beginning.
Built for Generations
The mountains of our home region provide a fitting symbol for the work we do. Among the most recognizable is Seneca Rocks, a distinctive West Virginia landmark that appears throughout Vandalia Wealth’s visual identity. Its rugged formation rising above the surrounding landscape reflects many of the qualities we associate with our firm: strength, resilience, perspective, and an enduring connection to place.
Seneca Rocks also serves as a reminder that a strong foundation is built over time. Its presence feels both grounded and forward-looking—firmly rooted in West Virginia while reaching confidently toward what lies ahead. That balance mirrors our vision for Vandalia Wealth: to remain true to the people, values, and communities that shaped us while continuing to grow and serve clients across the region and throughout the country.
Good financial guidance requires many of those same qualities.
Markets change. Tax laws have evolved. Families grow. Careers take unexpected turns. Businesses are created, expanded, sold, or passed to another generation. Retirement goals become retirement realities. Inheritance creates new opportunities and new responsibilities.
Through those changes, a trusted advisory relationship can provide continuity. It can help clients distinguish temporary noise from meaningful change, make decisions with greater clarity, and remain focused on what matters most over time.
That is the standard Vandalia Wealth strives to uphold. We favor planning over reaction, clarity over unnecessary complexity, and measured progress over short-term thinking. We recognize that wealth is often created across decades and that responsible stewardship may extend across generations.
Being built for generations also applies to our firm. We are building an organization designed to endure—one capable of developing future leaders, supporting advisors, maintaining continuity, and serving clients well beyond any one individual’s career.
More Than Our Name
The name Vandalia reminds us where we came from, but it also challenges us to live up to what the name has come to represent within our firm.
It calls us to approach our work with grit: remaining disciplined and persistent through difficult decisions and changing circumstances.
It calls us to value unity: working as one firm with a shared commitment to our clients and one another.
It calls us to act with integrity: communicating honestly, operating transparently, and doing what is right.
It calls on us to remain devoted: building lasting relationships and treating each client’s goals with the care they deserve.
And it calls us to pursue excellence: continually strengthening our advice, our service, and the organization supporting both.
Vandalia is more than a historical reference. It is more than a regional identity. And it is more than the name displayed on our offices and communications.
It is a reminder of where we began, the principles that brought us together, and the standard we strive to uphold every day.
We are proud to be rooted in Appalachia. We are proud to serve clients well beyond it. And as Vandalia Wealth continues to grow, we remain committed to providing thoughtful, disciplined, and personal financial guidance, grounded in enduring values and built for generations.
